Silence

"Mama, who gave me, no way to handle things..."

- Steven Sater, "Mama Who Bore Me", Spring Awakening

Across religion, sexuality, abortion, abuse, and suicide, silence is the repeating mechanism that sustains harm. Adults repeatedly insist that certain topics must not be spoken of, instructing children to forget, obey, and endure.

Information is withheld in the name of protection, while suffering is ignored in the name of order. Silence is never neutral. It is an active force that enables violence, isolation, and death. In Spring Awakening, what destroys these young people is not their curiosity or desire, but a world that refuses to speak honestly or listen at all. A haunting reminder that when we stay silent in the face of wrongdoing, we find ourselves culpable in the outcome. When we do nothing, when we say nothing, we are regrettably making a choice to sustain something we might otherwise oppose.

Spring Awakening is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com
